Mr. Hernandez
Welcome to English 3! I started as an English teacher in 2006 at Los Altos High School. After 3 years at Los Altos, I moved on and taught English in Chile the summer of 2009 and eventually relocated to Valinda School of Academics in La Puente where I worked as an Academic Interventionists. From 2012-2014 I taught English in China at Zhoushan High School as part of the International Education Program. I'm now glad to be back at Los Altos working as English teacher! I enjoy exercising, hanging out with my wife, Pam, and listening to music every opportunity I get! I believe in family, love, and peace!
Course Description: English 3 focuses on developing academic skills related to reading, writing, speaking, and listening using historical and contemporary American literature as the foundation. Instruction will be centered on mastering the California Common Core State Standards by emphasizing skills and techniques, such as the 4 C’s (communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity), WICOR strategies, GRR (gradual release of responsibility), that will foster college and career readiness.
In order to address 21st Century learning, the district has adopted a comprehensive, technologically advanced curriculum developed by StudySync and McGraw Hill. “StudySync is a cross-curricular platform built from the Common Core State Standards that brings together centuries of fiction and nonfiction texts with video and other multimedia elements to advance students' reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.”
In addition to consumable handbooks, StudySync relies heavily on digital components that offer literacy instruction, interdisciplinary collaboration, peer-to-peer review, extended research and writing projects, and assessments. This is why the district has also invested in technology – computers, laptops, and tablets – that will make Study Sync’s online components easily accessible.
